A Very Happy New Year to all our supporters and madventurers!

“THANK YOU!” the Mad Foundation would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has given so generously in 2005, without your support, many more communities throughout the developing world would be lacking the fundamental resources needed to build a better future for themselves and future generations.

A special thanks goes to all at Madventurer for their unwavering support and to the hard working volunteers from Madventurer without whom many of our vital community development projects could not go ahead.

One of the biggest pieces of news this year is The Mad Foundation achieving full charity status (Charity Registration Number 1111805). Although a charitable organisation since 2000, this new status, along with our newly appointed trustees, is going to help us to continue our work in the developing world and hopefully increase our ability to provide support where it is needed most.

2005 was a busy, challenging but ultimately successful year and we’re delighted that we have been able to support some fantastic appeals across the globe, including school building in East Africa, a water-pipe project in Peru and tsunami projects in Sri Lanka.

2006 promises to be our most challenging year yet and we’re already inundated with appeals for support, some of these appeals are featured below.

Urgent Appeal for Peru: The building of a workshop for training and employment at a children’s home in Cusco.

Casa del Corazon is a home and school for country children, who mainly come from a small rural village about 45 minutes from Cusco city.

Due to the lack of facilities in rural communities, and transport problems, many children receive a poor education, if they attend school at all. Most children by the age of ten are put to work in the fields.

Many families want their children to continue to study, but this option is not available to them...<<More>>

Trustee takes on his own fundraising challenge

One of our very own trustees, Vincent Woods, is set to climb Kilimanjaro next month, in an effort to raise much needed funds for an education project in Tanzania.

This will be Vincent’s first visit to Tanzania, prior to taking on the very difficult challenge of conquering Mount Kilimanjaro, he’ll be taking the opportunity to visit the community we’re trying to assist in Amani, in the East Usumbara Mountains. As well as visiting our current project in Amani, the building of a young women’s workshop facility, he’ll visit the site where, with his help, we hope to raise the funds to build a much needed three classroom block.

Amani is a poor and remote community with many development needs, we want to raise £9000 to build three classrooms which are crucial to the local children and the future of this community, the current facilities are utterly inadequate and massively overcrowded. To date we have raised approximately £1800 and Vincent is hoping to add at least £2000 to that fund.

To date Vince, with the support of his colleagues at Benchmark Communications, has raised over £900 - please help us to build this vital education facility in Amani by sponsoring Vince in his attempt on Kilimanjaro by or by making a donation direct.

Hermelinda and Children

Summer 2005: How we helped protect children at a school in Llupa, Northern Peru

Llupa is a small indigenous village in northern Peru. A poor community with many development needs, their basic school building and its pupils were endangered by the unpredictable river flowing alongside the school.

We have been able to support the building of a wall and in the summer of this year with the help of volunteers from Madventurer a wall was constructed much to the delight of local parents.

One of the parents, a local cook called Hermelinda (pictured above with her two daughters) was one of the many who came forward to express what the building of this wall meant:

“It’s a fantastic project. Something that we [the village] have wanted for a long time but not had the money. Before it was built we used to send our children down the school very scared, very scared for their safety. The river is so close and the children play so close to it that we were constantly afraid that they would have an accident. There had been two occasions previous where children had played too close and fallen in. Also the river always rises during the rainy season which made the situation even more worrying. Now we are so much happier in the knowledge that we can send our children to the school and only have to worry about their education not their safety!”
